City Overview

  Sun City West

Sun City West, Arizona

History of Sun City West
In 1911, Orval A. Robertson, a farmer living in Peoria, applied to homestead land in the area. The land had a market value of $1.25 per acre, but could be obtained for free provided the homesteader occupied the land for five years and cultivated a portion of it for four of those years. Robertson grow maize, sorghum, millet and pumpkins.

Robertson eventually lost his land to taxes. Sometime later some of the land became a ranch and feed lot known as Lizard Acres. When it was doing well, Lizard Acres was able to accommodate nearly 40,000 cattle and supply feed to other ranchers.

The Del Webb Corporation purchased the land in 1971 in anticipation of building a second retirement community like Sun City, that was doing so well.

Amenities were developed before the first homes were built. Hillcrest Golf Course opened in October 1978, just as the first residents were moving in. The R.H. Johnson Recreation Center, Crestview Restaurant and the 7,169 seat Sundome Center for the Performing Arts were also nearly completed.

Today, there are over 17,000 homes with approximately 32,000 residents. Sun City West is an age restricted community. One member of the household must be 55 or older and no one under the age of 18 is permitted residence.
